Details UNCOMMON
Notes This somewhat forlorn cormorant is sharing a bit of open water with a few mallards, several ring-billed gulls and some Canada Geese. One wing seems to droop a bit but that may just be poor posture.
Weather Clear, cool and breezy.

Visited this bird again at 4:00 and it's not looking any happier.

-keen eyes; that wing may be the reason that this individual is still here & that open area of water is it's life-line.

From my balcony I see the cormorant remains (10:50 a.m.), amid a bunch of gulls.

Poor guy, guess he won't have to suffer through the cold. Sometime the injured birds pick my yard to hide, it's always sad to see them die.

The cormorant remains on the lake at 5:13 p.m. I suspect the open water has shrunk to the point where this bird will not be able to achieve sufficient 'ground speed' to get airborne. I am assuming this bird is a youngster from the last hatch but such may not be the case. If it is a youngster of the year it won't have any idea where it should be going...

This bird lingers as the geese and gulls come and go.

-if the bird is able to get that flying gear going, these solitary individuals will sometimes join up with other lingering waterfowl and follow them to better climes.

Observed it fishing about 2:45 today. As the light faded it was back on the ice amid a bunch of gulls.

Today the open water, about the size of two hockey rinks, was completely iced over and there was no sign of the cormorant.

-the beauty of this short story, is that all of us can make our own conclusions! :o))
