I saw them at our lake. They appeared to be migrating. Before I left the lake they all gathered together and formed their "V", and then took off towards the Northeast. It was so interesting to watch and listen to them call to each other......after they gathered at one place on the lake, that's when they took off.
-both you and kittyhawk have noted these Fall patterns today; I wonder if they have rehearsals?
- I'm reading a library book that Rangifer had recommended, "Mind of the Raven", and the author, Heinrich, has researched this gathering behavior that your geese exhibited, in ravens.
I don't know....it was very interesting, because the geese were at first split up on the lake. Some were in the middle, and then there were a bunch sitting on the beach. One goose swam over toward the beach and started calling. When he did the other geese started to walk towards the water. He didn't leave the spot or stop calling until all the geese were in the water and joined up with the others. Then as if on a certain signal they all took off. Their were quite a few, but I couldn't get an exact count....about 40-80??? The whole process took about 15 min. - 30min. I was so happy that I had gotten there in time to watch all of this! I had been allowed to come home from work early that day, otherwise I would have missed it. :)
