Details RARE
Notes Another one of my night walks. I was walking through the woods, and I heard one off in the distance. I quickly walked over to it, and it stayed perfectly still for me to admire! One beautiful specimen!
Weather 68 degrees, 10pm, slight wind, no clouds.

Geobirds classified it as rare, but the Saw-whet is actually the most common owl in Missouri!

-do you walk to the sound until you are upon it? Do you use a flash light? Are they usually in a nest cavity?

Yep. I was just walking around my usual trails, and I heard it. I just followed the call. Yes, I use a flashlight once I know I'm really close. And not necessarily. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. It depends on a number of things. Usually, however, if they are in a nest cavity, they're calling to their mate who is more than likely close by.
