-your observation of size difference is described by Sibley- "Accipitrids begin incubation before the clutch is complete, producing an asynchronous hatch and chicks of different sizes. Brood reduction is common, especially if food is limited, when the youngest (and weakest) chick will often starve. In some cases, older chicks may hasten the demise of a smaller sibling by attacking it." Let's hope food is plentiful!
