Details COMMON (LOW NUMBERS)
Notes Maplewood Park. Discovered a hawk's nest high up in tree - all of a sudden noticed movement! Stood there for 20 minutes looking through my binoculars hoping to see something ... all of a sudden a very cute face is looking at me ... black mask, ringed tail. A raccoon! So, did he/she discover eggs or just find an empty nest and decide to curl up for an afternoon nap?
Weather Sunny, windy, +18c.

-certainly could be either scenario; good to see that your patience paid off, at least, with a surprise!

Hi Jim. Haven't seen the Raccoon since but discovered more hawk nests - am really hoping to see some babies this year! The "First Day of Spring" here yesterday was cloudy, -1c windchill with on & off snow. Arrgh! After a week of sunny, +17c to +19c weather and out walking around wearing a t-shirt, yesterday's weather was quite a shock to the system! Felt chilled so had a hot chocolate. :)

-you're right! Spring is really here, astronomically speaking! In Alberta in March and April we can just about get anything! One minute it's binoculars and sodas; the next is cameras and hot chocolate! :o)) -anxious to hear about what kind of hawks you are dealing with; presume they could be any of the following: Red-tailed, Rough-legged, Broad-winged, Red-shouldered and any of the Accipiters? -Also; keep your eyes open for Turkey Vultures, particularly those that have wing tags.

Jim ... in the neighbourhood, have seen both Sharp-shinned and Cooper's. Not too far away are Red-tailed. Thanks to the link you sent me awhile back, if I ever luck out and get to see a wing tagged Turkey Vulture, I will know who to report it to! :D This morning here was once again -1c windchill with snow that was accumulating on rooftops. Another hot chocolate day!
