Jim ... they were all on the top branches of a bare tree, facing the sun. I'm sitting here typing this and looking at major frost on the inside of the windows! Supposed to be another cold one tomorrow. Hot chocolate weather. :D
-it's kind of cool to try and determine what species that you are looking at , from great distances; your clues are limited to behavior, size, shape and audio; House Finches, Waxwings, Redpolls and Siskins seem to prefer the higher branches so that they are prepared for a fast get- a- way in a flock; House Sparrows prefer mid to lower positions in trees, or hedges and shrubs, so that they are able to scatter low in all directions to alternative cover; Chickadees usually will land high in trees, drop down to feeding stations to retrieve a seed and then take it to medium height, to crack it open for the nut; when they decide to move on, they prefer to first move higher in the trees and then depart individually.
