Beaumaris Lake
| About | Lake Beaumaris is the largest of 60 storm water lakes maintained by the city of Edmonton. Since the lake was created in the late 1970s it has evolved to a significant ecosystem. Its narrow margins support cattails, bulrushes, willows, grasses and sedges in addition to the city-maintained lawns, trees and shrubs. Forage fish, sticklebacks and chub, in addition to discarded pond fish thrive in its waters. A collection of a few of my Beaumaris photos can be found here: http://photoshare.shaw.ca/view/4679844776-1213298195-12189/ |
| Notable birds | I have identified 93 species of birds here; the more notable of which are: American White Pelican, Belted Kingfisher, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Black Scoter, Cape May Warbler, Common Loon, Common Merganser, Double-crested Cormorant, Eared Grebe, Forster's Tern, Great Blue Heron, Great Horned Owl, Green-winged Teal, Hooded Merganser, Grebes (Horned, Eared, Pied-billed & Red-necked), Greater Yellowlegs, Long-tailed Duck, Redhead, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Ruddy Duck, Sora, Spotted Sandpiper, Surf Scoter, Tundra Swan, Western Tanager, Wilson's Phalarope and Wilson's Warbler. |
| Travel | Beaumaris Lake is situated north of 153 Avenue and east of Castle Downs Road, in behind the Lakeside Landing Mall. Foot access is possible from several locations but most visitors park their cars in the shopping centre lot and walk east, by the church or north of the Castle Downs Library. About 2.5 kms of sidewalk ring the lake. |
