Black-tailed Gull

The Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris) is a medium-sized (46cm) gull resident in East Asia, including China and Japan. It has yellow legs and a red and black spot at the end of the bill. As the name suggests, it has a black tail. The bird has a cat-like call, giving it its Japanese name — Umineko, "Sea cat". It eats various small fish.

The bird's droppings are quite acidic and because of this plants do not grow around the black-tailed gull's nest site. The droppings can also cause corrosion to the bodywork of cars. Around large colonies the ground can become covered in white.
