Our Team
James Peters, Dreamer
"In January 2005, I spent time soul-searching what I most wanted to accomplish in life," says James. "I realized that the ecclectic mix of my love of birds, education, and web technology could be woven together." James began envisioning a simple identification tool for helping people new to birding. Birdbrain, and the seeds of Geobirds, were born.
"When I started to see how helpful a web-based user community could be for birders, I found my ideas were racing ahead of my own coding learning curve. I needed someone with the technical chops to work with me in bringing Geobirds to life. I was very fortunate to have known Ken when he was an undergrad, and even more fortunate that he was available to build the back end for the site."
James now oversees the development, marketing, and operations of Geobirds and it's parent company, Crimson Trails.
Ken Hoetmer, Tech Guru
In the fall of 2005, Ken wandered back to Canada after a year in Kathmandu and other lesser-known parts of Asia, carrying a fresh M.Sc. thesis, a bucketload of photos, and no plans.
Along came James with a feather-brained idea. "I originally only planned to work on Geobirds for a month, and then find a responsible office job," says Ken. Ken still doesn't have a responsible office job, having decided that freelancing is much better.
Aside from Geobirds, Ken is also the creator of Quikmaps, a service for doodling on google maps, and is responsible for anything Google maps related at Lonely Planet.
David Gillis, Artist
While not making Geobirds look beautiful, Dave spends his time snowboarding, instructing teenagers in the finer points of bowling, and defining user eperiences for award-winning Toronto firm teehan+lax.
Anything terrific in Geobirds' design invariably finds its roots in Dave's artistic understanding of interface design. "If an idea needs work, it probably wasn't Dave's", say both James and Ken.
Dave used to live across the wall from Ken, until Ken wandered off to Edmonton. "Ken really couldn't hack the big city," says Dave.
